THE MUSIC has no real interest in verticality. It engages in a purely horizontal process: an energy in which an unbound plasticity of rhythm is the aim of the play. The voices move through the same moment but with different time. Maybe the moments are in no (historical) time, or just in their own time, but the timbre and the expressional will is to sound through all times. It is music of an exploratory nature, not revelatory. It is not new, it repeats; material activated once more, spiritually, voices heard long before. But, it is set in motion during a specific time in history.
IN 1994 we recorded a series of duos released on the album I Fear This War (ALCD012). Those duos were interspersed with songs and texts by American poet Lorine Niedecker and colored by the nearness in time to the first Iraq war. Thirty years later we got together again for another series of duo recordings. This time with the sole intention of co-existing in music for a moment. The musical affinity was immediate and natural. Stepping down in the same river again; necessarily different, necessarily connected.
